The Department of Oncology at Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital (The Second Affiliated Hospital of Southern University of Science and Technology) is a key clinical specialty, focusing on standardized comprehensive cancer care, day-chemotherapy models, and clinical research. It aims to become a regional center for infection-associated tumors and common solid malignancies.
The department has a team of 8 physicians, including 1 Consultant (Department Chair Dr. Liu Hu), 1 Associate Consultant, and 2 Ph.D. holders (1 currently pursuing Ph.D.). The nursing team consists of 18 registered nurses, 5 of whom are specialized oncology nurses. The team possesses extensive experience in medical oncology and clinical trial management.
2.Clinical Services

· Immunotherapy: Routinely administers PD-1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint inhibitors for advanced solid tumors such as lung cancer and gastrointestinal cancers.
· DayChemotherapy & Outpatient Chemotherapy: Operates a dedicated day-care chemotherapy unit and outpatient chemotherapy clinic, allowing eligible patients to receive treatment and return home on the same day, significantly reducing waiting time.
· Palliative Care & Supportive Treatment: In collaboration with secondary hospitals and community health centers, the department has established a tiered palliative care network, providing pain management, psychological support, and holistic care for end-stage cancer patients.
· Multidisciplinary Team (MDT): Regularly holds MDT meetings involving thoracic surgery, infectious diseases, radiology, and pathology to formulate individualized treatment plans for complex cancer cases.
3.Special Features & Advantages
· Efficient DayChemotherapy Model
The department was among the first in Shenzhen to standardize day-care chemotherapy and outpatient chemotherapy services. Patients can complete chemotherapy or immunotherapy within hours and return home, greatly improving patient experience and bed turnover. In 2025, the average length of stay decreased to 5.16 days, with bed occupancy rates reaching 100% in several months.
· PatientCentered WholeCourse Management
The “Dandelion Home” patient support groups (now expanded to three WeChat groups) provide online consultation, follow-up support, and health education, enhancing patient adherence and satisfaction. Regular artistic and social events for cancer patients are organized to foster a sense of belonging.
· Tiered Palliative Care Network
Acting as the regional technical hub for palliative care, the department has established standardized referral pathways and an online collaboration platform with secondary hospitals and community health centers, delivering continuous, whole-course palliative care for end-stage cancer patients.
· Research Focus Leveraging Hospital Strengths
Capitalizing on the hospital’s national leadership in infectious diseases, the department is building two unique clinical cohorts: “infection-associated tumors” (e.g., liver cancer, cervical cancer) and “lung cancer with concurrent tuberculosis”, supporting personalized treatment and real-world studies.
4.Education & Research
· Education: The department serves as a training base for undergraduate and graduate students of Southern University of Science and Technology School of Medicine and is accredited for resident standardization training. Dr. Liu Hu, Department Chair, is a master’s supervisor and actively mentors young physicians and graduate students.
