The Department of Infectious Diseases is a National Key Clinical Specialty in Infectious Diseases, a National Standardized Residency Training Base for Internal Medicine (Infectious Diseases), a Distinguished Specialty in Infectious Diseases of Guangdong Province, a Key Specialty in Infectious Diseases of Guangdong Province, and a Key Discipline in Emerging Infectious Diseases of Shenzhen. The department has a team of 25 professionals, including 2 Consultants, 3 Associate Consultants, 6 Attending Physicians, and 18 specialized nurses, with 2 Ph.D. and 7 Master's degree holders.
2.Clinical Services
Infectious Diseases Involving Multiple Systems
Covers infections across multiple sites and etiologies, including the respiratory system, urinary system, digestive system, central nervous system, deep-seated abscesses, and bloodstream infections. Services include pathogen culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, metagenomic next-generation sequencing/targeted next-generation sequencing (mNGS/tNGS), precise anti-infective therapy, and comprehensive management of sepsis.
Fever of Unknown Origin (FUO) and Complex Infections
A multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach is established for the diagnosis and management of fever of unknown origin, as well as complex and refractory infections. Advanced techniques such as molecular diagnostics and mNGS are employed to achieve precise diagnosis and personalized treatment.
The department also provides specialized care for immunocompromised patients, including those with advanced malignancies or post-transplantation status, with comprehensive individualized anti-infective management.
Liver Diseases
Covers viral hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury, autoimmune liver diseases, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Services include antiviral therapy, artificial liver support systems, non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis, and comprehensive whole-course management of liver diseases.
Common, Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases
The department is responsible for rapid screening, diagnosis, isolation, and critical care management of common and emerging infectious diseases, supported by a well-established emergency response system and robust infection prevention and control capabilities.
3.Special Features & Advantages
Precision Diagnosis and Treatment System for Complex and Refractory Infections
Focused on precision diagnosis, the department has pioneered the establishment of a pathogen diagnosis platform covering multisystem infections. Advanced techniques such as pathogen culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, a full range of puncture examinations, mNGS/tNGS, and molecular diagnostics are routinely performed, achieving a pathogen detection rate that leads the region. A comprehensive management model combining multidisciplinary team (MDT) and precision treatment for severe infections has been established for patients with fever of unknown origin, complex and refractory infections, and immunocompromised individuals (e.g., advanced cancer or post-transplant patients). With over 500 complex infection cases managed annually, the department delivers personalized anti-infective therapy and significantly improves the survival rate of critical patients.
Comprehensive Critical Care Platform for Severe Liver Diseases
As a traditional area of strength, the department has accumulated extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Artificial liver support systems are routinely applied, with over 200 cases treated annually. In addition, non-invasive diagnostic techniques for liver cirrhosis and early diagnostic techniques for liver cancer are utilized to establish a full-course management system, covering from early screening for cirrhosis and cancer to long-term follow-up, providing patients with liver diseases comprehensive, high-quality care throughout the disease continuum.
Emergency Preparedness and Response Capacity for Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases
As a National Key Clinical Specialty and a Key Discipline in Emerging Infectious Diseases of Shenzhen, the department is responsible for rapid screening, diagnosis, and critical care of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in the region. Equipped with a robust emergency response system and strong infection prevention and control capabilities, the department has played a central role in the control of major infectious disease outbreaks in recent years, including SARS, COVID-19, avian influenza, dengue fever, and chikungunya fever. A comprehensive response model encompassing rapid identification, precise diagnosis, standardized isolation, and critical care management has been established, providing a solid safeguard for regional public health security.
4.Education & Research
Education:The department serves as the Infectious Diseases Training Base of the National Standardized Residency Training Base for Internal Medicine. It is responsible for delivering lectures in Infectious Diseases, Parasitic Diseases, and Emerging Infectious Diseases for medical undergraduates and graduate students from Shenzhen University and Southern University of Science and Technology. The department also functions as a clinical clerkship and internship site for medical undergraduates from Shenzhen University and Southern University of Science and Technology, as well as for students from the Clinical Medicine School and the School of Public Health of Sun Yat-sen University. Additionally, the department has trained numerous postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and master's students.
Research:The department has been awarded 9 research projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Key Research and Development Programs during the 13th and 14th Five-Year Plan periods. It has received 13 scientific research achievement awards, including the Special Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of Guangdong Province and the First Prize for Medical Science and Technology of Guangdong Province. The department has published over 100 high-level medical papers in internationally renowned journals such as Nature Medicine and The Lancet Microbe, authored 8 monographs, and been granted 4 invention patents. Additionally, the department has led or participated in dozens of clinical GCP and IIT studies, and has contributed to the development of 3 COVID-19 clinical guidelines.
